"LIVING WITH FIRE"
The July 28th edition of the Chester Progressive included a special supplement entitled "Living With Fire." This 20 page tabloid was a joint project of multiple agencies under the leadership of the Plumas County Fire Safe Council, and summarizes the what, why and how of residential fire hazard risks and reduction measures. Please take the time to read the supplement, and then retain it for future reference. The information it contains might just help you prevent a tragedy. (If you don't subscribe to the newspaper, you will soon find additional copies of the supplement at the West Almanor Fire Station.)

07/20/10 - Duplicate Bridge

A game of duplicate bridge was played at the Lassen Club in Chester on Friday afternoon, July 9th. Sue & Dave Maham, the owners of the Lassen Club, have provided space and tables for the bridge club on several Friday afternoons, for which we are very thankful. The game consisted of 4 1/2 tables or 18 persons competing on 27 boards. The pairs that made the most points were: Marilyn Penick & Fran Swift with a score of 51.5 points; Ann & Chuck Bull came in second with 43.5 points (both pairs representing the Lake Almanor Country Club); The team from the West Shore, Joan Cox & Julie Azevedo, were in third place with a score of 36.5 points; The team from Susanville, Les Dickinson & Dave Kaber, placed 4th with a score of 34.5 points.

Still another duplicate bridge game was played at the Lassen Club on Friday afternoon, July 16th. Two Grand Slams were bid and made during the game. One slam was made by Jeannette Smith & Gail Newton representing the West Shore , and a second slam was made by Les Dickinson and Dave Kaber, the team from Susanville. Grand Slams are a rarity and a thrill for the pairs that accomplish the feat. The winners of this game were: Charlene & Gary Ferguson in first place, representing Chester with a score of 59.5 points; Harry Broderick & Jack Frank in second place, (representing LACC) with a score of 58.5 points; Les Dickinson and Dave Kaber in third place (from Susanville) with a score of 58 points; and Hannelore & Calvin Zerwick in fourth place (also from LACC) with a score of 56 points.

The next game of Friday afternoon Bridge will be played on July 23rd, at the Bowling Alley in Chester . The Patricia Anderson has invited the club to play a game in the bar area in Chester Bowling Center . There are 24 persons already signed up to play. However, we always welcome more contestants, since more players increase the competition. Anyone living in the Almanor basin or Susanville is welcome to join in on a very challenging game. Partners can usually be arranged for single persons. Reservations are required, so please send an email to anitaandjack@hotmail.com or call 259-2777. Be sure to include your email address and phone number.

Similarly, a bridge game is played on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursday Evening at 6:45 Pm. This game is played at Fire House #2 on the Lake Almanor Peninsula . Anyone living in the Lake Almanor Basin or in Susanville is encouraged to play with the group! If you wish to play in the Thursday game, please call 259-5263 to make a reservation or send an email to marpat7@frontiernet.net.

07/01/10 -BURN BAN
Cal Fire has announced the return of the usual summer burn ban, commencing at midnight on June 30. This means that ALL open,
outdoor fires are prohibited at Lake Almanor West and surrounding areas, until the ban is lifted after the return of wet weather in the
autumn. Previously-issued burn permits are no longer valid during the burn ban. Wood-burning fire pits and decorative fire holders
such as found on patios or in yards are included in the ban.

Also, just as a reminder, fireworks of any kind are prohibited throughout Plumas County. Even so-called "safe & sane" fireworks
are prohibited here.

06/30/10 -LOCAL PRECIPITATION ON TARGET
June is the final month in the customary "water year," and the accumulated precipitation in the Lake Almanor basin for the season came in very close to the long term average figure. While the month of June produced less than a tenth of an inch of rain (and no new snowfall), the pattern had already been set by precipitation received during the winter and spring.

The Prattville monitoring site registered 32.71 inches of total precipitation for the year, or 98% of average. Snowfall on the west shore totaled some 234 inches for the year, or 173% of average.

The moisture from the 2009-2010 season is only slightly higher than the accumulation during the previous season, and both figures are quite near the average. Two near-average years in a row are definitely a plus for local vegetation after two prior years of well below average precipitation.

We are now into our annual summer dry spell. Long term records indicate that July typically brings about 0.3 inches of rain, but there have been many instances in recent years where the month has been much drier. In fact, we usually don't experience any significant moisture until about October.

These warm and dry conditions increase the danger of fire in the region. Extra care is definitely in order as we go about our daily routines or visit the expanse of forested lands around us. Please take time to ensure that your home has defensible space all around it; contact your local fire department or CalFire if you need advice on what to do.

06/24/10 - Art Around the Lake

Art Around the Lake is presented by the Lake Almanor Community Foundation, as 501(c)3 corporation. All the proceeds go to benefit the music and arts programs in local Almanor Basin schools. All the work is performed by volunteers. This year, thanks to the generosity of the Foxwood development, we are holding an elegant dinner/auction on Saturday, July 10 at 5:30. Tickets are $40 each and include a wine reception, dinner and dessert by Bela Luna Catering. The community has been magnanimous in their donations for the auction. Tickets and donations are tax-deductible. We have invited some of our neighbors and friends to decorate tables, and there are still a few tickets left. Joe Gilmore, owner of the Giggling Crow in Chester, will be our auctioneer.

If you are interested in joining us, please contact Judy Chenowyth 259-2354. For more information, you may visit our website, www.artaroundthelake.org. Thanks, Joyanne Soderholm

06/04/10 -TRAIL MAINTENANCE
A heads up note from the Forest Service: There will be some contracted maintenance activity on at least parts of the paved Lake Almanor Recreation Trail between now and the 4th of July. This may involve filling holes, digging out and repaving spots where roots have created bumps, and sealing the surface with an oil and sand mix. The temporary inconvenience should lead to an improved experience on the trail when the work is complete.

4/29/10 -Yard Debris Disposal
If you are starting to wonder what to do with all the needles and other natural debris that has accumulated in your yard over the winter, you might want to check the West Almanor Fire Department webpage dealing with the matter:

http://www.citlink.net/~westalmanorfd/page8/page8.html
The local cogeneration plan, Mount Lassen Power, confirms that they are indeed accepting residential green waste for the usual nominal fee at their plant near Westwood. You can bring it there on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8 am to 4 pm. They will ONLY accept natural debris; any garbage or other materials in the load will cause the entire load to be rejected.
